Luminator developed the Luminator Reliability Process in 2004 and has refined and proven this process ever since. Today, the Luminator Reliability Process provides world class product assessment, reliability test program development, testing and evaluation to the aerospace, defense, mass transit, heavy transportation and the electronics industries. Our Customers span the globe and our process has been used successfully to introduce mature products into their application environments which range from the harshest exposures on high performance aircraft to complex mobile electronic systems.
Introducing the Process at the early stages of product development is key to getting the most benefit from the complete evaluation. Beginning with the product assessment, using predictive and analytical methods gives insight into the basic product configuration and guidance on component definition and overall materials selection. Predictive methods include MIL-STD-217 and Telcordia which can identify component level reliability. Analytical methods include Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) modeling, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). These predictive and analytical methods combined are often termed “Design for Reliability”.
Reliability test program development is the stage of identifying the critical elements of the application environment and also brings the significant design aspects of the product into focus. This stage includes thermal environmental conditions, mechanical environmental conditions, electrical performance conditions and any other operating conditions such as chemical and safety considerations that are unique to the application. Once these conditions are quantitatively identified, they can be accelerated and applied to the product through accelerated product testing. This process, known as QALT (Quantitative Accelerated Life Testing), provides the detailed test planning and acceleration profiles needed to perform the testing required to evaluate the product. The QALT profiles also provide the base data for stress screening as required.
Reliability testing is the stage used to subject the product to the accelerated test profiles, make any adjustments to the product design (if needed) through accurate failure analysis, and complete the Reliability process of a new design. Thermal, mechanical, performance and safety Reliability testing is conducted at Luminator Technical Laboratories (LTL), an ISO 17025 certified Electrical and Mechanical testing laboratory. Additional testing unique to certain products can be conducted through the use of the LTL partner network of product testing providers. The depth of the LTL partner network bridges the gap for virtually any product (with the exception of food products and biological substances) and provides a turnkey path for product reliability enhancement.
Products come in all shapes and sizes however the ability to introduce robust, mature products carrying with them the capacity to perform in their application can set a company apart from their competitors. Investing in your product reliability will give your organization this competitive edge and will help position it to become the “go to people” for new products and technology in your industry.
Measuring the appearance of products starts with defining the light used to view the item. Luminator, initially a lighting company, has been defining that light for over six decades. Our state of the art equipment includes the measurement of visible, ultraviolet and infer-red light for intensity, color, and chromaticity. Luminator has pioneered Night Vision compatible lighting and emitters for the Defense industry and our equipment is installed on dozens of Military aircraft and vehicle platforms.
Luminator uses a 100-foot goniometer for measuring high intensity lights including aircraft anti-collision and navigation lights and search/landing lights for helicopters. Automotive and transit industry lights are also measured in this instrument and can be certified to all Depart of Transportation regulations.
Luminator also uses a culminating sphere in conjunction with our spectroradiometer to assess color and intensity for extremely precise measurements. These instruments provide the most accurate determinations of color wavelength available anywhere in the world and our testing is traceable to NIST standards for certifiable results.
The Luminator Spectroradiometry department also measures color, gloss and reflectance of objects and materials. Regardless of color measurement scale, Luminator provides accurate color testing for any type of solid material as well as color fastness and reliability testing to the applicable environment. These environments can include accelerated UV testing, thermal cycle testing, and humidity as well as salt fog and blowing rain thru our network partner laboratories.
